Educational Program Sponsorship in Communities Statewide

NMHC programs are usually free (some groups may charge a modest admission just to cover their costs of that program). Our programs are always open to the public in virtually every county, city, and many villages in New Mexico. For nearly a half century, NMHC has sponsored countless public humanities programs, including over 3,000 Speakers Bureau programs within the past 10 years alone. NMHC programs reach a statewide audience of over 500,000 each year.

Fosters Economic Development

NMHC sponsors programs in the humanities for museums, libraries, historical and cultural sites, and over 50 communities each year. Over 19 million visits are made annually to New Mexico cultural resources, accounting for twenty percent of the $2.2 billion tourism industry ($438 million). NMHC strives to foster this economic development in a responsible way by supporting compelling and thought provoking humanities-related projects.

Promotes and Fosters Civic Participation and Responsibility

NMHC is involved in a number of activities which enhance the public's understanding of and engagement in civic life. We sponsor major programs on the foundations of democracy (the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, and Religious Freedom) as well as public forums on issues such as land use practices, the homeless, the incarcerated, science and society, immigration, the role of government, and the importance of community. NMHC funds help support local communities, rural and urban, as they explore their history, culture, their past and their future.
